In this eco-friendly age, natural materials like grass cloth and bamboo wallpapers are become more and more popular since they are made from renewable, organic resources. Due to the nature of this highly textured product, seams do not match perfectly. It is not advisable to use grass cloths in kitchens or bathrooms as they are not washable and can mildew with excess moisture.
These papers are not pre-pasted and require a heavy duty vinyl paste for installation. Professional hangers usually charge more for hanging grass cloth wallpapers.
Manufacturers suggest opening your rolls and inspecting them before hanging for one important reason: finding and reporting a defect. Keep all of your labels as manufacturers will not take paper back without them! Please note that all paper is inspected by the manufacturer, and if it is determined not to be defective, they will not replace for free. Manufacturers do not reimburse for materials used in hanging, for shipping, or for labor charged by a professional hanger.
If a defect is found, you should use a post-it note to mark the defect, and tape the label with pattern number and die lot to the roll. A defect constitutes a pattern that does not match properly, white edges that create a line where your paper meets, marks on the paper that do not belong to the pattern, and insufficient paste (when installation instructions from manufacturer are followed). Retailers are required to send all defective merchandise to the warehouse to be inspected, and then a credit is issued. Many retailers will not refund until they have been refunded for the defective paper, especially on special order items.
It is important to be patient with the retailer as their hands are tied. If you happen to be the first person to report a defective paper for a certain pattern and run number, it will take longer to have replaced as the manufacturer has a process they must follow.
